Summer Safety For Pets – Enjoy The Heat!

Keep Your Pets Cool, Safe, and Happy All Season Long

Written by: Cuddles, The Hedgehog

Summer isn’t just a season, it’s a mindset and I am so glad it is here. Hot summer days bring a little more freedom, lots of sunshine, and long evenings with golden sunsets. This article is all about pet safety during the summer months, but I want to incorporate what a great time of year it is for all pets.

For pet lovers, summer is the perfect time to bond with your furry sidekick in fresh, creative ways. Whether it’s trying a new hike, going bird watching, setting up a backyard camping adventure, or organizing a treasure hunt with hidden treats, summer days offer longer daylight hours and cooler mornings and evenings, perfect for playing after work or discovering new places together. While we often think this article is for dogs only, it is really for many different pets and I come to you from a hedgehog point of view.

One of the best summer activities for pets is hitting the water, while this is a favorite for most dogs, turtles, snakes and frogs enjoy some water time. From lakes to pools to beaches, this is a great season to introduce your pup to swimming if they haven’t tried it before. Don’t forget to start slow, use a dog life jacket, and turn it into a fun, confidence-building experience. Many dogs take to the water naturally, but even the hesitant ones can learn to love a splash session with the right encouragement and safety measures. Here is a great article with more about Teaching Dogs To Swim.

“Pets, people, sand, sun and sea, sounds like summer fun to me!”

Hot summer is the perfect excuse to whip up homemade frozen dog treats. Blend ingredients your pup already loves, like peanut butter, yogurt, bananas, or blueberries into a fun frozen snack. Not only will they keep dogs cool, but they also make enrichment time more rewarding and delicious. There are even frozen treat toys designed to be stuffed and frozen for longer-lasting entertainment.

When the midday heat becomes too much, it’s time to bring the fun indoors. Get creative with hide-and-seek games, puzzle toys, or indoor agility courses. Cats love vertical climbing, window perches, and interactive feather wands, while high-energy dogs can benefit from scent games, tug toys, and brain games that keep boredom at bay. The key to summer is flexibility, adapting to the heat while still soaking up the joy this season brings. With just a little planning, you and your pet can turn summer into a time of unforgettable adventures, cool treats, and tail-wagging fun.

Summertime is a critical time for your pet’s health. educate yourself, read a book, do the research and be prepared to help pets from heat, injury and the fun of summer. But don’t worry, just be prepared.

Never Leave Your Pet in a Parked Car

Even a few minutes in a vehicle can be dangerous—even with the windows cracked. If pets can’t come inside with you, leave them safely at home.

10 Tips For Pet Summer Days

1. Hydration is Everything

Always provide fresh, cool water at home and when you’re out and about. Collapsible bowls and pet-friendly water bottles are great on the go. A fountain, outdoor water bowl, or a gravity fed water bowl are great additions to outdoor spaces. A hydrated pet is a happy pet, especially on hot days.

2. Protect Those Paws

Hot pavement and sand can burn sensitive paws. Test surfaces with your hand, opt for early morning or evening walks, and consider dog shoes for added protection. Apply paw wax and lotions before and after walks to keep pet paws in the best condition.

3. Pack the Pet Sunscreen

Yes, dogs and cats can get sunburned—especially on their noses, ears, and bellies. Use a pet-safe sunscreen and reapply after swimming or extended sun exposure. Breathable, moisture-wicking shirts can help lower body temperature while providing UV protection.

4. Create a Cool-Off Spot Outdoors

Whether it’s a shaded tent, a cooling mat, or a kiddie pool, giving your pet a designated cool-down area outside can prevent overheating and make summer lounging safe and enjoyable. Elevated pet beds promote airflow and help keep pets cool when lounging outside. They’re great for travel too—lightweight and easy to pack.

5. Poo Prepared

Time to stock up on dog waste bags, stashing them in the car, dog walking bag, and in your luggage.

6. Track The Paws

Summer trips near and far open up new changes for pets to get lost, explore and even run to meet the fun. Add a tracker to pet collars to keep them safe as you keep track of their location.

7. Eyes on the Sky: Eye Protection

If you’re headed to windy beaches, mountain trails, or boating adventures, consider goggles made for dogs to shield their eyes from sun, sand, and debris.

8. Float-Ready Fun: Life Jackets

Water play is a summer must, but not all pets are natural swimmers. A well-fitted life jacket keeps them safe and adds peace of mind—plus, many come with handles to help lift them in and out of the water.

9. Treats For Extra Energy

Pets use extra energy the more active they are, don’t forget to pack treats and extra food. Plan a few extra snack times to keep enough calories in your pets during busy days.

10. Summer Health: Heatstroke Awareness and Injury Preparation

Pack a first aid kit, bone up on pet heatstroke awareness and protect pets from insect bites, burns, and injury. Be aware of your pet’s temperature, here is what you need to know.

Summer adventures are better when shared with pets—but a little prep goes a long way. Being mindful of heat, hydration, and safety gear ensures every sunny outing becomes a treasured memory. So get outside, soak it up, and celebrate the season of warmth with your four-legged companion by your side.

1. Hydration is Everything

In the summer, pets may need up to 50% more water than in cooler months due to heat and increased activity. A good rule of thumb is 1–2 ounces of water per pound of body weight daily, depending on activity and temperature. Cats may also need more hydration, especially if they eat dry food. To keep pets hydrated, provide multiple bowls of fresh water, bring water on walks, add moisture to food, serve frozen treats, or use a pet fountain to encourage drinking. Add extra water bowls, fountains or toughs in the garden, on the porch or even near the sidewalk for other pups to enjoy during shot summer walks.

2. Protect Those Paws

Summer heat can turn sidewalks, sand, and asphalt into dangerous surfaces for pet paws. A good rule: if it’s too hot for your bare hand after 7 seconds, it’s too hot for your pet. Walking during early morning or late evening is safer, but even then, protection is key. Pet shoes or booties offer a barrier against hot pavement, sharp rocks, and rough trails, making them ideal for hikes, beach trips, or city strolls. For pets who resist shoes, paw wax is a great alternative. Apply paw wax before outdoor time to create a protective layer, and again afterward to soothe and condition paw pads. Avoid walking on blacktop or artificial turf when it’s hot, as these can cause painful burns or long-term damage. Protecting your pet’s paws keeps them comfortable, active, and safe all summer long.

3. Protect The Skin: Apply The Sunscreen Or Try a Pet Sun Shirt

Using dog-friendly sunscreen is important because dogs, especially those with short hair, light-colored fur, pink skin, or exposed areas like noses, bellies, and ear tips can get sunburned just like humans. Sunburn not only causes pain but also increases the risk of skin cancer. Not all pets need sunscreen, but it’s crucial for those with thin or no fur in sun-exposed areas. You should apply pet-safe sunscreen (never human sunscreen, as it can be toxic) 15–20 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every 2–4 hours, especially if your dog swims or plays in the water. It’s particularly important during long walks, beach trips, hikes, or anytime your dog will be in direct sunlight. Sunscreen is a simple step that can prevent discomfort and serious health issues, making it a must-have in your summer pet safety kit. Warming: look for zinc oxide, it is toxic to dogs and should never be applied to your dog’s skin. Some cats may benefit from sunscreen, especially hairless breeds like Sphynx cats or light-colored cats with thin or sparse fur. Areas most vulnerable include the nose, ears, and belly if they lounge belly-up in the sun. However, not all pet sunscreens that are safe for dogs are automatically safe for cats. Cats groom themselves frequently, so it’s critical to use a cat-safe, non-toxic, fragrance-free sunscreen specifically labeled as safe for feline use. Ingredients like zinc oxide and salicylates, which are common in human sunscreen, are toxic to cats and should always be avoided. When in doubt, consult your vet for recommendations and opt for shade, window film, or UV-protective clothing to reduce sun exposure for indoor or outdoor cats.

4. Create Pet Cool Off Spots: Elevate and Cover

When temperatures rise, creating cool-off spots around your porch, patio, or backyard helps pets stay safe and comfortable. From shady garden nooks under trees to ventilated doghouses and elevated cooling beds, there are plenty of ways to beat the heat. Add gel cooling mats, shallow splash pools, or even frozen treat stations to encourage hydration and relaxation. Covered patios with misting fans or cool tile surfaces offer relief, while instinctive behaviors like rolling in shaded grass help pets naturally regulate their body temperature. With a mix of cozy shade, airflow, and creative cooling solutions, your outdoor space can become a summer haven for your furry friend.

5. Prepare For The Poo: Walk and Potty Prepared

Summer adventures are more fun when you’re fully prepared, and that includes having all your dog walking essentials on hand. Stock up on leash accessories, waste bag storage, and plenty of poop bags so you’re never caught off guard, Whether you’re at the park, the beach, or exploring a new trail choose the right dog waste bags for your adventure. A dedicated tote or car storage bin can keep everything organized and ready to grab and go. Practicing good potty etiquette by picking up after your dog and disposing of waste properly not only shows respect for others but also helps keep outdoor spaces clean and enjoyable for all. A little planning goes a long way toward smooth, stress-free outings with your pup. Grab a waterproof leash to keep with you for all summer activities to keep pets safe on adventures, a quick potty break at a rest stop, or a walk on the beach.

6. Track The Paws: Know Where Your Pets Are

Summer adventures often mean more running, roaming, and exploring for our pets—but with that freedom comes the risk of getting lost. Whether you’re hiking a new trail, staying at a vacation rental, or just letting your pet enjoy more outdoor time, it’s important to plan ahead for their safety. Modern pet tracking technology, like GPS collars and smart tags, makes it easier than ever to keep tabs on your furry companion, offering real-time location updates whether they’re nearby or far from home. These tools provide peace of mind and can be a lifesaver if your pet wanders too far. Investing in pet trackers helps ensure that no matter where summer takes you, you’ll always be able to track the paws and bring them home safe. When spending time at the beach or campsite consider a leash holder or runner to keep them safe. Make sure to provide shade when pets are secure.

7. Eyes on the Sky: Eye Protection

For pets who love summer adventures, whether it’s cruising with the windows down, riding along on a bike, or feeling the breeze on a boat, eye protection is a smart and stylish way to keep them safe. Wind, dust, debris, and even UV rays can irritate or damage sensitive eyes, especially during high-speed activities. Dog and cat goggles come in a variety of sizes and styles to fit everything from tiny pups to large breeds, offering a snug and comfortable fit that stays in place. Not only do they look adorable, but they also help prevent long-term eye issues, making them a must-have for pets who love to feel the wind in their fur.

8. Preserve Lives: Be Float Ready

Life jackets and floatation vests are a smart safety choice for dogs and even adventurous cats—especially those who aren’t strong swimmers or are exploring unfamiliar or fast-moving water. Whether you’re at the lake, on a boat, or just starting swimming lessons, a properly fitted life preserver can give pets the confidence and support they need while keeping them safe. Look for designs with adjustable straps and a sturdy handle on top so you can easily lift your pet out of the water if needed. Measuring your pet ensures the best fit for comfort and security. Even the most water-loving pets can benefit from this extra layer of safety when summer fun gets splashy.

9. Snack Time: Treats For Extra Energy

During busy summer days filled with hiking, swimming, and extra outdoor play, pets burn more energy and may need extra calories to keep up. Offering additional treats, snacks, or slightly larger meals can help fuel their fun and maintain healthy energy levels. Active dogs especially benefit from high-protein, nutrient-rich snacks between meals—just be mindful of portion sizes to avoid overfeeding. You can offer small snacks every few hours during activity-heavy days, and frozen treats are a great way to cool down and recharge. Always keep fresh water nearby and adjust your pet’s diet based on their activity level, age, and breed. Just like us, pets need proper fuel for an active summer lifestyle.

10. Summer Health: Heatstroke Awareness and First Air Preparation

Summer brings sunshine and fun, but it also increases the risk of heatstroke and other health concerns for pets. It’s important to recognize the signs of heatstroke—excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, or uncoordinated movement and act quickly by moving your pet to a shaded area, offering cool (not cold) water, and contacting your vet. Always pack a pet-friendly first aid kit that includes supplies for cuts, scrapes, insect bites, and basic care, along with flea, tick, and heartworm prevention treatments. Keep tweezers, antiseptic wipes, and emergency contact info handy for any unexpected situations. With a little preparation and awareness, you can help keep your pet safe and healthy all summer long.

Summer Pet Safety: Temperature Awareness, Cooling Techniques, and Smart Care

Pet Owners: It’s Time to Get Educated on Pet Temperatures

Understanding your pet’s body temperature is one of the most important parts of warm-weather pet care. In the heat of summer, pets are more susceptible to overheating and heatstroke, so learning the basics can make a real difference. A normal temperature for dogs and cats ranges from 101.0 to 102.5°F—which is higher than a human’s normal temperature. If your pet’s temperature rises above 104°F or falls below 99°F, it’s time to call your vet.

Start by Knowing Their Baseline

Use a pet-specific thermometer to check your pet’s temperature on a normal day, and record it somewhere handy—like your phone or pet journal. This baseline will help you notice changes early if your pet ever starts acting off. Keep a thermometer in your first aid kit, especially when traveling or spending long periods outdoors.

Understand How Pets Regulate Heat

Pets use conduction (lying on cool surfaces), convection (water play), and resting to regulate their temperature. Providing cool places to lie down, access to clean water, and shallow splash zones can help prevent overheating. Lounging isn’t just laziness—it’s nature’s way of keeping them cool.

What to Watch Out For

Signs of heatstroke include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, warm ears or nose, vomiting, and disorientation. If you spot these signs, move your pet to shade, offer cool (not ice-cold) water, and contact your vet immediately.

Avoid the Shave (Most of the Time)

While it may seem like shaving your pet will help them cool off, most pets’ fur actually acts as insulation—slowing heat absorption and helping regulate temperature. If your pet is shaved for medical or grooming reasons, be sure to apply pet-safe sunscreen to exposed skin.

Use Tools to Stay Ahead

Modern pet tech, like the Waggle Temperature Monitor, can help you track temperature, humidity, and heat index when pets are outside, in RVs, or in hot climates. It’s especially useful for pets spending extended time in cars, boats, or outdoor spaces.

Be Prepared and Stay Cool

Heatstroke can happen fast—especially in parked cars—so never leave pets unattended, even for a few minutes. Keep a summer-ready pet first aid kit, know the signs of distress, and protect paws and noses with balms or wax after walks. With awareness, a little preparation, and the right tools, you’ll help your pets stay safe, happy, and healthy all summer long.
