I want to start this article by defining what I mean by Pet Space. The definition that comes to mind is a thoughtfully designed space for pets—a place that reflects our personality and needs while also complementing the home we share. It’s more than just a bed or crate; it’s a dedicated space that feels like home, a place that is truly for us. Let’s explore designing the perfect pet space: interior designer secrets for a stylish & functional place.

Creating pet spaces is a trend I am seeing not only huge growith, but great potential for unleashing creativiy in your pet home. In this article I am going to walk you through the process of creating the ultimate pet space, tips for customization, and inspiration for making it one of a kind.

Finding A Location: A pet space can take many forms—it might be a cozy corner of a room, a tucked-away spot in the laundry room, a repurposed closet, or even the space under the stairs. And for the luckiest pets, it could be an entire room of their own! No matter the size, shape, or style, the key is creating a dedicated retreat where pets feel comfortable, secure, and truly at home.

Do Your Research: The best way to start designing your pet space is by creating a binder or digital folder where you can collect ideas, product inspiration, and material swatches. Don’t hold back—gather as many ideas as possible! Over time, you’ll refine your selections, curating a cohesive vision for your pet’s space. Look for inspiration in online galleries, design books, and magazines. I like to keep a folder filled with images, products, and design elements that catch my eye, gradually moving my final picks to a dedicated mood board. Snap photos on your phone of spaces you love, download favorites from the web, and either print them for a physical mood board or organize them in a digital version. Having all your ideas in one place will help you create a well-thought-out pet space that fits your style and your pet’s needs.

To help you find the perfect design style for your pet space, browse our Pet Shops by Design Style to see which one speaks to you. You can blend them to create unique spaces, or have a little fun and choose a theme such as tropical, beach, or or a trendy penthouse.

Choose An Inpsiration Piece: Your design inspiration can come from anything—a piece of art, a fabric print, or even a favorite pet toy. I always start with an inspiration swatch, image, or sample that helps guide the design, color palette, and overall feel of the space. This anchor piece sets the tone and ensures a cohesive look. Take a photo, scan, or print your inspiration piece so you can reference it throughout the design process. Keeping it visible will help you make choices that align with your vision, from furniture and decor to textures and finishes.

Create A Mood Board: This is a crucial step in the design process and a tool that interior designers use for every project. A mood board allows you to see all the elements of your design together, helping you make adjustments before you begin—saving time, money, and energy. Even if your pet space isn’t a full room, don’t skip this step—it’s both fun and practical to see your vision come together before bringing it to life. Start with your focal point or inspiration piece, then build around it by adding paint swatches, fabric samples, furniture images, pet bowls, and even toys. Seeing everything in one place ensures your pet’s space feels cohesive and thoughtfully designed.

Mood boards can be digital or physical, depending on what works best for you. Digital mood boards are great for organizing online finds, while physical boards let you pin fabric swatches, printed images, and material samples for a tactile experience.

Design The Space: That’s right, channel your inner interior designer and decide where everything will go. I like to start with a focal poin, maybe a sign with your pet’s name, a pet portrait or a pet-themed wallpaper wall. Then create a base with a rug, floor mat, or painted space that designates the foundation of the space. Followed by adding the elements your pet needs from a crafte or bed to fabulous pet bowls. I will walk through all the design options you might want to consider for your space below, keep scrolling when you are done reading. You can sketch the space out on paper, use a design program online or try Canva a great tool for designing so many different things.

Keep in mind that elegant pet spaces may be great for some dogs and cats, a more industrial design is optimal for others. While both will be stunning, each will be well used and well enjoyed.

Don’t Rush, Enjoy The Process

Execute Your Project: Buy, order, and gather everything you plan for the space. While you can do in steps, it is imporatnt to know you have evertying in process or you can get derailed if you cannot get certain elements in your plan.

Let your pet be a part of the process, allowing them to check things out, now if you are painting, sawing or doing fun but dangerous things, put us somewhere safe, because we like to be part of the action and might get oursvleves hurt in the process.

When the project is complete, give us time to get used to the space. Spend time with us there playing with the toys, maybe while we eats. Making it a place where treats are dispensed is a great way to connect us to the new space as well.

Now that you have a good idea on the process, scroll to be inspired to find the perfect elements for your pet space. While some elements may not work for your pet home, we hope you find just what you are looking for and more.

I am so excited the trend of pet spaces is taking off. A great activity for pet people that pets get to enjoy! So Enjoy!

Finding Your Focal Point: The Heart of Your Pet Space

Every great design starts with a focal point—a defining element that sets the tone and brings balance to a space. When designing a pet-friendly area, choosing a strong focal point helps guide your choices, ensuring a cohesive look that reflects both your style and your pet’s personality. A focal point can be anything that inspires you: a statement piece of pet-themed art, a cherished photo of your furry friend, or even a bold pet-inspired wallpaper. These elements not only add visual interest but also create a sense of purpose within the space.

Pet Art

Commission a local artist to sketch, paint, or professionally photograph your pet. Alternatively, choose a classic piece of pet art from a renowned artist or get creative and make your own mixed media artwork, painting, or photography. Decide whether to showcase smaller pieces in a gallery wall arrangement or opt for one statement piece that captures the heart of the space. If you’re hanging artwork within paw-reach, be sure to secure it properly—screwing it into the wall, securing all corners, or even painting a decorative frame directly onto the wall for a seamless look. While we may appreciate fine art, your pet might see it as their next favorite toy!

Wallpaper

Wallpaper trends come and go and using wallpaper as a design element moves in and out of favor. No matter the trend, pet-themed wallpaper is a great design element creating a focal wall or for every wall. Choose old-fashioned wallpaper that you paste to the wall or embrace new technology and choose a peel and stick wallpaper that is easy to put up and quick to come down when you are ready for a change. While a great dog, cat or pet wallpaper maybe be a perfect choice, there are so many great prints that are pefect for pet spaces, you can really create a unique focal point.
