Meet Monty Don, the beloved British horticulturist and longtime host of Gardeners’ World, whose passion for gardening is deeply intertwined with his love for dogs. From his late golden retriever Nigel to his current companions Ned and Peggy, Monty’s dogs have always played a central role in both his life and his garden. Known for designing spaces that are as welcoming to dogs as they are to people, Monty embraces a natural, relaxed approach—one that celebrates the joy, companionship, and therapeutic power of sharing a garden with four-legged friends.
Monty Don’s approach is less about creating a perfectly “dog-proof” garden and more about embracing the mess, fun, and life dogs bring into the garden. His thoughtful, relaxed philosophy resonates with pet lovers who want beautiful outdoor spaces that their dogs can truly enjoy.
Country Living UK Magazine takes a deep dive into Monty that will give you more insight into this dog loving man in their article Who is Monty Don? Everything you need to know about the gardener and broadcaster?
1. Natural, Open Layouts
Monty avoids overly formal or restrictive garden structures. His gardens include flowing paths, open lawns, and accessible areas where dogs can explore safely. His Golden Retriever Nigel famously created his own trails through the garden, which Monty allowed to become part of the design—embracing a shared space between gardener and dog.
2. Non-Toxic Plant Choices
Monty is mindful of choosing plants that are not harmful to dogs. While he doesn’t always spell this out in every segment, his awareness of dogs in the garden influences plant placement and selection. He avoids known toxic species like foxgloves and lilies in areas dogs frequent.
3. Accessible Water Sources
He often includes garden ponds, shallow fountains, or bowls of fresh water tucked around the garden to ensure dogs stay hydrated—especially during filming sessions in the heat.
4. Safe Surfaces
Monty’s gardens feature dog-friendly surfaces like grass, gravel, and natural stone instead of sharp mulch or hot paving. This consideration helps protect paws and keeps dogs comfortable while roaming.
5. Shaded Resting Spots
Large shrubs, pergolas, and tree-covered corners provide natural shade and cool areas for dogs to rest. His dogs were often filmed lounging under these leafy sanctuaries.
6. Incorporating Dogs into the Routine
Rather than fencing dogs out, Monty lets them be a part of the gardening experience. His dogs were allowed to roam, sniff, and even nap in the borders—creating a lived-in, shared feeling to the space. He believes a garden is not just for people, but for the whole family, including pets.
