Time spent outdoors with dogs, cats and pets who love it is a great way to bond with your pet while doing what you love. Gone are the days of leaving the pooch behind to hit the trails, ski mountain, or paddle board, many are ready to adventure with you. Here are a few more great outdoor actives with pets you might want to give a try.

1. Backpacking & Climbing

Explore the trails with your dog by your side. Hiking is a great way to enjoy nature, get some exercise, and let your dog sniff and explore new environments. Remember to bring plenty of water for both of you and keep your dog on a leash if required by park rules.

2. Fetch and Frisbee

There’s nothing like a classic game of fetch or frisbee to burn off some energy. Find an open, safe area away from hazards, and let your dog run and catch to their heart’s content.

Pro Tip: Use a glow-in-the-dark ball or frisbee for evening play sessions.

3. Swimming & Surfing

If your campsite is near a dog-friendly lake, river, or beach, let your dog take a dip. Swimming is an excellent low-impact exercise, and many dogs love splashing around in the water.

Heads Up: Always supervise your dog while they’re swimming and be mindful of currents and water conditions and keep a life jacket sized to fit your pet at all times.

4. Trail Runs and Jogging

For the more active campers, trail running or jogging with your dog can be a thrilling way to explore the area. Make sure the terrain is suitable for your dog’s paws and consider using a hands-free leash for convenience.

5. Nature Scavenger Hunt

Create a scavenger hunt for your group, family and the dog. Hide treats or toys around the campsite and let them use their nose to find them. This activity is mentally stimulating and a lot of fun for curious pups. If traveling into the woods make sure to choose safe and non-poisonous items to hunt.

6. Obstacle Course

Set up a mini obstacle course using natural elements like fallen logs, rocks, and sticks. Guide your dog through jumps, weaves, and tunnels for a fun and engaging workout.

7. Stargazing and Relaxing by the Fire

After a day of activity, settle down with your dog for some stargazing or relaxing by the campfire. Bring a cozy blanket for your dog to lie on and enjoy the tranquility of the night together. Check out the website and podcast BaxterandBella.com – a puppy training podcast for great tips in training puppies to do great things, but also to just relax.

Note: Keep your dog at a safe distance from the fire and ensure they’re supervised to avoid accidents.

8. Training and Tricks

Use the open space and distraction-free environment to practice training and tricks. Teach your dog new commands or reinforce existing ones. Training in a new environment can be very beneficial and mentally stimulating for your dog. There are great pet training books for kids and adults with great tips for teaching pets tricks and advanced training.

9. Photography Sessions

Capture the memories of your trip with a mini photoshoot. Take pictures of your dog in scenic spots around the campsite. These photos will be cherished keepsakes of your adventure.

10. Bird Watching

If your dog is calm and enjoys sitting quietly, try some bird watching. Bring a pair of binoculars and identify different bird species together. Your dog might enjoy the calmness of this activity and the chance to observe wildlife.

11. Fishing

Pack up the tackle box and head to the lake, river or sea to see what is biting today. If your fishing will be done from the boat don’t forget to keep everyone very hydrated. An umbrella or cool spot is always a great idea for dogs who love the catch.

11. Hunting

For pets and people who love the hunt, it is a great outdoor activity with pets. Whether on the hunt for doves and pheasant or bigger game such as deer and while turkeys, make sure your pup is trained, has safety, reflective apparel, and enjoys the hunt as much as you do.

Camping offers a wealth of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors with your dog. These activities will ensure both of you have a memorable and fun-filled trip. Remember to always prioritize safety, follow local guidelines, and respect the natural environment.
