5 Ways to Help Keep Pets Off Furniture & Counters

Sometimes the safest place for a pet is not on the sofa, table, counter or another tempting surface. The goal is not to scare or punish them, but to make off-limits areas less rewarding while showing them exactly where you do want them to go. A combination of gentle reminders, smart tools and positive reinforcement can help create clear household boundaries.

1. Try a Smart Pet Training Mat
   Place a smart or pressure-sensitive training mat on an off-limits surface to provide a gentle sound or alert when a pet steps on it. Look for options designed to discourage access without causing pain or fear, and pair the reminder with praise when your pet chooses an approved spot instead.
2. Use a Motion-Activated Pet-Safe Spray
   Motion detectors can sense when a pet approaches a restricted area and release a quick puff of air or pet-safe spray. These can be especially useful for counters because the reminder happens whether you are standing nearby or not. Avoid spraying your pet directly yourself—the idea is simply to make the area less inviting.
3. Give Them a Better Place to Be
