Travel To NWA (Northwest Arkansas) A Pet-Friendly Destination
Written by: Sloan
Hello from Northwest Arkansas! I’m Sloan, a French Bulldog with a nose for adventure and a soft spot for all things pet friendly. I’ve sniffed out the best spots from Fayetteville to Bella Vista to bring you a one-stop resource for planning a pet-friendly trip to the Natural State. So grab your leash—let’s get this tail-wagging journey started!
If you’ve never been to Arkansas—especially the northwest corner—you’re in for a treat. (Did someone say treat?!) This region is made up of several small towns that together form Northwest Arkansas, anchored by major names like Walmart, Tyson Foods, JB Hunt, and of course, the University of Arkansas. All that business brings big benefits: vibrant communities, welcoming people, and plenty of happy pets. As the area continues to grow, so does its commitment to making both residents and visiting pets feel right at home. Here is a little bit about each area in the region.
When you enter Fayetteville from the south, you’re welcomed by one of the largest college football stadiums in the country, the Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium that is perfectly positioned into the landscape of the University of Arkansas, nestled in the rolling foothills of the Ozarks. This lively college town is not only home to the Razorbacks but also a haven for pet lovers, with numerous dog parks, off-leash areas, and pet-friendly restaurants and patios. Dickson Street is a local hotspot, lined with restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues that buzz with energy year-round. Fayetteville also shines when it comes to festivals and outdoor events, from a vibrant weekly farmers market to festive celebrations like Mardi Gras, Christmas on the Square, and the quirky Spring Fest, where they actually race beds (yes, beds!). There are actually pup-friendly events that are a big deal, like the Dickson Street Pup Crawl in April, the Fayetteville Dogwood Festival at the end of Aprill, and Falltoberfest’s “Dogtoberfest” at the end of September. They also host “Dog Daze” and “Paws Off” so check on dates around your travel plans, because in Fayetteville, pets are always part of the fun.
“Go Hawgs!” – they say that a lot around here.
Springdale is the next stop as you head north through Northwest Arkansas, and this town sure knows how to treat its dog-loving crowd. Start your visit with a stop at Core Brewing & Distilling Company, where dogs are welcome inside—yes, inside!, and their official mascot is a very distinguished Dachshund. Springdale is also home to the Northwest Arkansas Naturals minor league baseball team, which hosts the beloved pet-friendly event “Bark in the Ballpark.” For pups who need some playtime while you explore, Dog Party USA is a standout local doggy daycare known across the region for its top-notch care and fun atmosphere. Downtown Springdale is incredibly pet-friendly, with a growing lineup of bars, restaurants, and an outdoor entertainment district where dining with your dog is the norm. Music lovers will enjoy live performances on Friday nights at Shirley’s and free summer concerts in the park. Be sure to check the Downtown Springdale website for the latest events and pet-friendly happenings.
Rogers, Arkansas is just a trail ride, highway hop, or scenic backroad north of Springdale and offers two distinct experiences for visitors. Downtown Rogers is full of charm, featuring the dog-friendly Railyard Live music venue, which hosts free outdoor concerts, along with a variety of bars, restaurants, and the world-renowned Onyx Coffee Lab headquarters—a must-stop for caffeine lovers. Just a few steps away, Lake Atalanta offers a peaceful, shaded trail perfect for a leashed walk and top-tier squirrel watching. On the other side of town, modern Rogers boasts destinations like TopGolf, the Walmart AMP, and an array of shops and dining options. Just west of the city lies Beaver Lake, a scenic Corps of Engineers project that offers the ultimate lake life experience. Whether your pup loves boating, shoreline strolls, or splashing in the water, Beaver Lake is a pet-friendly paradise.
Home to Walmart, Bentonville, Arkansas has a lot to bark about. At the heart of the city is the Bentonville Square, a hub of culture, community, and tail-wagging fun. Just off the square sits 21c Museum Hotel—a uniquely pet-friendly stop worth visiting even if you’re only dropping by the art-filled lobby. The square also hosts the region’s largest farmers market, and just around the corner is Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. While pets aren’t allowed inside the museum, the surrounding trails are packed with outdoor art, shaded paths, and plenty of scenic spots to explore.
Bentonville is also the epicenter of Northwest Arkansas’s extensive bike trail system. Whether your pet loves to jog beside you or ride in style, these pet-friendly trails are a dream come true. Keep your eyes peeled—you’ll spot everything from trail-running pups to laid-back cats hitching a ride in bike baskets! The new Walmart home office campus is another standout, thoughtfully designed with pets and people in mind. With integrated dog parks, residential areas, and accessible trails, it’s clear that Bentonville is a place where four-legged friends are always welcome.
Bentonville boasts several dog parks and pet-friendly eateries, but Osage Park really stole my heart with its 2-acre off-leash play space—perfect for a good sprint! And don’t miss a visit to Three Dog Bakery for a drool-worthy pupcake or two.
Bella Vista, Arkansas is the northernmost city in the state before you cross into Missouri, and it’s pawsitively peaceful—filled with trails, parks, and lakes that make it a nature lover’s dream. I stretched my legs on the Tanyard Creek Nature Trail, a gentle loop featuring waterfalls, wildlife, and even a handy pup watering station. While the area is well-known for its beautiful golf courses (perfect for our two-legged companions), it also offers plenty of pet-friendly Airbnb options—great for setting up a home base while you explore the region with your furry best friend.
The Northwest Arkansas Community

Special mention goes to the Best Friends Pet Resource Center in Bentonville, Arkansas—a 20,000-square-foot, no-kill animal shelter and community hub dedicated to lifesaving, adoption, and outreach. With its open, cage-free design and vibrant public art installations, the center offers a warm, inviting space for homeless pets to connect with potential families. Visitors can engage with adoptable animals, relax in designated cat rooms, or take part in fun volunteer activities like making pet toys. The center also provides essential services including foster care support, veterinary care, and educational programs. With a mission to help end the killing of shelter animals nationwide by 2025, Best Friends partners with shelters throughout Arkansas to share resources, training, and advocacy. A truly unique pet experience, The Best Friends Pet Resource Center is a ground-breaking facility that reimagines how communities support pets and the people who love them. Located in Bentonville, it is the first of its kind in the country, a welcoming, open-to-the-public space that blends adoption services, pet wellness resources, education, and community connection all under one roof. A must visit spot for pet-lovers who live in Northwest Arkansas or those traveling to the area. Open to the public, you can tour the facility, meet pets available for adoption, or spend one on one time with dogs and cats in their unique “get to know me” rooms.
This innovative pet resource center is more than an animal shelter; it’s a hub where people and pets come together to learn, bond, and thrive. With cozy adoption areas (no cages or kennels in sight), interactive spaces, and a design that feels more like a community center than a rescue facility, it’s helping transform how animal welfare is experienced.
The inspiration behind the center is to facilitate bringing pets and people together and help to bring about a time when there are no more homeless pets. With a national goal of making the U.S. no-kill by 2025, Best Friends saw an opportunity in Northwest Arkansas to create a model that could be replicated across the country, one that puts connection and compassion at the forefront. Rather than just being a place to adopt a pet, the center offers training classes, veterinary referrals, support for struggling pet owners, youth education programs, and volunteer opportunities that empower the entire community to be part of the solution.
Visitors are absolutely welcome! Whether you’re hoping to adopt a new best friend, attend an event, drop in for a tour, or simply spend time with adoptable pets, the center is designed to be open and accessible. Locals and visitors alike can support the mission by donating, fostering, volunteering, or spreading the word. It’s a place of hope and heart where everyone, two-legged or four, can feel the love. At Chuy’s Tex-Mex restaurants, pet lovers can participate in a fun, long-standing tradition: bring in a framed photo of your dog (or any pet) and receive a free appetizer or queso dip.
Here are the key details to know:
- Bring a framed photo of your pet – Chuy’s collects and displays these pet photos throughout their restaurants, often lining the bar area or entry walls with them.
- Most Chuy’s locations participate in the tradition – it is always a good idea to confirm participation, as some locations may vary slightly in promotions or policies.
- Promotion for dine-in guests
- Your Photo Becomes Part Of The Chuy’s Décor – Your framed pet photo is added to the Chuy’s décor permanently, becoming part of the “wall of dogs” with pride. It is a good idea to keep the original for safe keeping.
- Pet-friendly Patios – While dogs aren’t allowed inside the restaurants, many locations have pet-friendly patios where your pup can join you for your meal.
It’s a playful and generous way to celebrate pets, enjoy great Tex-Mex, and see your furry friend become part of the Chuy’s family wall. You can also upload your pet’s image and Chuy’s will donate $1 to local animal rescues.
